Kindergarten in summer?

In mid-June, the school holidays start and parents may be wondering how to manage their child's summer care. Schoolchildren have a wide range of camps to choose from - but what about the little ones who can't yet spend weeks away from the family? Should your toddler go to kindergarten in the summer?

If we look at it from the child's point of view, it is obvious that it is better for them to spend the summer in a community, according to a well-established system. In this case, group activities can offer more experience and interaction than boredom at home or a summer holiday spent "underfoot". At the same time, toddlers also deserve a few days or weeks off, when they can be exposed to new stimuli, unusual situations and special experiences.

If you ask parents, there may be circumstances that justify the need for a kindergarten to continue to fulfil its basic function of providing day care for children during the summer. There are some who cannot manage childcare at all, as they have fewer holidays this year due to COVID. Sometimes the grandparents who help are no longer alive, or are too old, impatient or live far away.

What about teachers? Are they happy to see the children, or (as some people think...) would they like to be relieved of the summer burden? Since the teaching and helper professions are all demanding, requiring maximum attention and a full personality, it has to be accepted that they cannot be done with the same effort all year long. It is necessary to rest and recharge, not only by taking a holiday, but also by preparing and planning for the coming year. In addition, the hands of head teachers are tied, as they are obliged to take statutory holidays during this period - so they have much less room for manoeuvre in terms of work organisation.

Practice shows that, as far as possible and taking account of the circumstances, local authorities are trying to organise sufficient and professionally adequate provision: institutions are staying open longer, or at least providing on-call services, taking into account the coronavirus epidemic, and of course assessing needs in advance.

So: should your child still go to kindergarten in the summer? Every family should provide holidays for their little ones as best as they can. If this is not always possible, they can count on the help of professionals who will do their best to help them.

What do you think? Should your child still go to nursery school in the summer?
